I'm not a Christian. I have no vested interest in Christianity or any of the trappings of Christianity.

And yet...

I really, really hate this trend of referring to Christmas as Hogswatch and Santa Claus as the Hogsfather. It's not cute, it's not charming or funny. It's deliberately insulting, intentionally belittling, and petty. In this age of religious tolerance that includes being tolerant of those who do not believe in religion, it's ridiculous that this term has proliferated the way it has. Yes, I get it. Not everyone believes in Christmas. And all those who do are clearly too stupid to live because OH NOES, they believe in a god. Now STFU and let people enjoy themselves.

If you don't like having a day off for NOT MY HOLIDAY! OMG! Then work and ask for a comp day.

Do you think if I liked the Discworld novels, I'd be less offended?

Apparently it's that one little adaptation because I didn't experience the same wanting to stab people feeling when I read those. 8-)

Probably it's just because I've seen it everywhere for a couple of weeks. I'm sure I didn't notice or think about it the first time. We could propose an experiment where you use it in every post and see if we reach a point where I feel like I want to strangle you. 8-) I'm sure scooter would help out. He loves tweaking people and an opportunity to tweak me never come amiss. 8-)

No, no, that's probably not necessary. Giftmas doesn't belittle the holiday, to me. It's more of a condemnation of the commercialization of it. The Halloween references I don't even understand so I'm not offended by those either.

I stopped reading Homestar Runner years ago and then completely forgot about it.

Also, I heard on NPR the other day that St. Nick in Germany was Blue.

In it's original form no. But a lot of people on the internet are using it like this:
"Stop talking about your Hogwswatch holiday! I don't care! I don't want to hear what the Hogfather brought you!"

To me, that conveys a level of (trying to think of the concept in English...) exclusionism, that's not quite what I'm looking for, but a separation between those people who have this holiday and me. And because of that separation, and the fact they don't say Christmas, it conveys a strong negative image, which, when added with the idea that these things in discworld are set up as a believed-in fantasy conveys to me that they consider Christmas a believed fantasy, rather than a religious expression. (Yeah, yeah, I know, it's same thing.)

Probably. Certainly, based on Small Gods and Hogfather, it's hard to say that the Discworld books are anti-belief. They're certainly against "belief" which is really self-aggrandizement, but that's quite different.

This Hogs thing is not a trend I've ever even heard of before this post. Obviously I am way out of it.

I'm not Christian but I love presents and cookies and cute little Santa figurines.

I don't think Santa was at the manger so I don't really consider him part of any religious holiday. I don't think they had a tree with cute little ornaments either. I'm happy to eat chocolate Easter eggs too and I am really sure they didn't have those at the crucifixion.

I don't get much in the way of presents since I'm now an orphan. I make lots of cookies and this year I've eaten most of them myself.

Hey I'm not George Washington, but I'll take that day off in February too without complaint. Even after I saw a play called A House Without Walls recently that doesn't show him in the best light as a slave owner.

Oh Lena, how you ramble on someone else's LJ.

Excellent points. I myself celebrate Veterans Day even though I come from a long, proud tradition of draft dodgers.

I'm not sure how you see this as belittling and petty, as opposed to a reference to the Discworld books. It's dorky, but that's something completely else.
