Do you give books as gifts?

To everyone? Or only to select people?

How do you feel about receiving books as gifts?

I love getting books as gifts and giving books as gifts. With books, unless the person is anti-reading, or really isn't interested in taking the time, you can make serious, loving, humourous, or thoughtful statements. One of my friends told me he hated getting books as presents because people thought that's what he wanted and he could always buy the books he wanted, he wanted something that spoke to him at that moment in his psychological place in time. He felt that for him a book was too easy a gift, one that didn't require the effort to figure out what he really wanted. I have no such problems. A book is always where I'm at, and I do think the right book, the well-chosen book, can speak to a person in their place.

What is the best book you ever bought for yourself?

And, why? What made it the best? What made it so special?

I spent my tax return buying the complete set of Richard Burton's Arabian Nights. That's a treasured set because I wanted it so badly, and I was so ridiculously poor when I got it. I'm also particularly partial to my second copy of the Decameron. It's a beautiful leatherbound edition with gilt edges and a very readable translation I picked up in a used bookstore.
